The stuff every sole trader should know

Questions sole traders ask

Straight answers

How much does an accountant cost for a sole trader?

Our fixed packages start at £19 + VAT a month, including your Self Assessment tax return and FreeAgent software (worth up to £330 a year). VAT-registered and busier businesses pay £39 or £69 + VAT — always agreed in writing first.

Do I even need an accountant as a sole trader?

Legally no — practically, a good one usually pays for themselves in claimed expenses, avoided penalties and hours you get back. From April 2026, Making Tax Digital also means quarterly digital filings for many sole traders, which is much easier with software and support.

What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

From 6 April 2026, sole traders with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates through software, plus a year-end declaration. The threshold drops to £30,000 in 2027 and £20,000 in 2028. Our packages handle it via FreeAgent.

Can you do my Self Assessment tax return?

Yes — preparation and filing is included in every package, along with dealing with HMRC on your behalf and reminding you what to pay and when.

I'm behind on my tax returns. Can you help?

Yes, without judgement. We tidy up late returns, negotiate time-to-pay with HMRC where needed, and get you onto a system where it never happens again.

Do you work with CIS subcontractors?

Yes. We handle CIS deduction statements, reclaim overpaid tax through your return, and keep your records straight — construction is one of our biggest client groups.
